Last night they showed a doco on Francis Bacon which I found really interesting. He generally works quite instinctively and doesn’t feel the need to tell everyone why he does what he does or what it means – he said it just is. He didn’t study at Art school but just fell into it via some design skills he was exhibiting. This was a 1970’s interview that I decided to stop watching after about an hour because it was obvious Bacon was drinking and although he was still sharp he was affected by alcohol – not good interviewer. I guess it was the 70’s.

Hi, I went to the Francis Bacon exhibition in Sydney recently and found it quite incredible. Despite the subject matter(I undestand that Bacon had/died from asthma and homosexuality was illegal in Britain at the time) I could see the reasons behind depicting personal figures in distortion, pain with mouths wide open. His painting technique and skill were undoubtable. The curator talk was very revealing….. perhaps its on youtube or Art Gallery of NSW website. Also went to Hazelbrook Gallery (Sutherland regional) where there was a Brett Whitely exhib….. he visited Bacon in London and was influenced by him. 2 great experiences. cheers
Thanks for your comment, I will look up the website. I was talking with a friend that just completed her MFA and we both saw the doco and both felt his comment about his art being just what it is without any explanation was a breath of fresh air. By the way, love Bred Whitely. If you get this soon – NGV is having a book sale this weekend in the great hall if interested. I’ll try post some info tomorrow.
