International Women’s Day art.

digburst

In my heart I didn’t miss it, with my work sadly I didn’t exhibit specifically for 2019 International Women’s Day however I have recently had some strong ideas regarding new work to do with women. In the new work I would like to show the different ages, careers, ethnicities and histories. Yet to formulate exactly how that will appear on paper but am thinking about it alot and have taken up life drawing again.

I hope in the future work I make to show women with quirks that are unexpected hybrids of what you might expect. I hope in the future that I too will be called a quirky unexpected hybrid, maybe I am one now.

Just came back from beautiful Byron Bay in New South Wales, Australia. Please look it up if you are from overseas. It’s so beautiful and loved by hippies of all ages. Yesterday they had a nude bike ride through the main street. The night before I saw whole families dressed and painted like Frida Kahlo (men too). Anything goes in Byron.

A trip into the city, that’s Melbourne.

I don’t get into town as often as I should so it was wonderful to see lots of new shops and businesses opening up.  On line shopping has it’s place but seeing new things that you might not even think of looking up on line is a great way to go.

I only went to Melbourne Central Shopping Centre, the Emporium and David Jones food hall.  David Jones food hall sounds really fancy but its not.  They have great food there which is eaten at communal tables.  I was on my own and met a great couple that were visiting from Brisbane.  I gave them some tips on what to see and they gave me their enthusiastic and friendly company while I was taking a break with a coffee and an apple and walnut cake big enough for three people.

I have not done very much wood carving recently and I am just a novice but I have posted a picture of a sweet little girl – more painting and less carving.

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year for 2019.

PS I am missing the snow that WordPress magically makes fall over my posts in December.

Favourite colour is all kinds of yellow.

This is a small painting of around 25 x 25cm using acrylic on board.  This is one of a series of four still-life works.  They are all framed in blondewood box frames.  I will post some of the others later.  Loved making them and using super vibrant colours.  I have used a limited palette as I always do however I will always introduce alizarin crimson for apples.  So only four colours plus white.  I think you can call that pretty limited.

Australia Day fun in the gardens.

Today is Australia Day.  I was assisting our woodworking club to sell some of their wares whilst other members were assisting children in assembling and building bird houses.  The tap tap tapping of hammers went all day long and the joy in the children’s faces was beautiful.  Here are a few photos for you to see.  It was very crowded and I am afraid I seem to have missed that in these photos.  There were actually lots of people from the parade that were walking around in star wars costumes and others in costumes from the countries that they originally came from e.g. Thai, Greek, Iranian, Egyptian etc.

I’m in love with handmade Kooklas by Helen.

These amazing characterful soft toys are made by Helen.  Helen has been making them for some time now and like most artists is more interested in their personalities and form than in selling or marketing them.  I own a couple now and thought I would show you how lovely and individual they are.  Please let me know if you like them so that I can relay that back to her for encouragement. I think they are lovely children’s toys but equally lovely adult toys.  I hope you like them.

Collage Mixed Media
Friday 22 April, 1 to 4pm
Tutor – Anne Warren
$130 (all materials provided)
We will prepare two surfaces as supports for your collage by experimenting with and using ink and acrylic paint.  When the time comes to cut pictures from books I will ask you to not think about what you are selecting but I will ask you to trust your intuition and just cut images that speak to or appeal to you.  I will try my best to share how I select the images I cut and how to approach the assemblage of the pieces.  I would always describe collage as fun as the process is meditative, restful, surprising, amusing and yet at the same time you can have a full conversation and get to know the people around you.
We will be using beautiful French Arches watercolour paper, ink and acrylic paint. I will provide you with a list of the materials we have used today so that you can continue creating art.
Materials list provided.

Painting the Still Life (acrylic)
Thursday 28 April, 1 – 4pm
Tutor – Anne Warren
 $140 (all materials provided)
In this class I will share with you some of the techniques and materials I use to make still-life paintings. For the last seven years I have used a limited colour palette for my paintings and I have barely shifted from that as there are so very many different colours that can be mixed using just the primary colours plus white. You will be encouraged to complete an acrylic still-life painting on canvas in this class.   At the end of the class I will provide a list of the materials that you will have used today to make your artwork so that you can continue creating art.

A few hiccups but fish mobile finished.

I have really enjoyed making this mobile.  Many moons ago I saw a Calder exhibition and fell in love with it.  I mean many moons ago – probably the 70’s and I didn’t even know who he was.  This is nothing like what I saw but the motivation has been there for a long time to make something that moved easily, gently with a breeze.  I kind of fell in to the carving of the balsa wood – the wood has been sitting in my studio for about 10 years.

As someone said to me it is like a collage, an assemblage and I guess that’s right.  The little red beads came off a bracelet, the string was purchased for gift tags, I cannot remember why I bought balsa wood 10 years ago and the finest crochet hook ever made was a tool I had in my kit that I never thought I would ever use (to drag the string through the wood).

I have one or two cuts on my fingers from the blade, lots of sneezing from the powdery dust and grit in my eyes, sanding a beautiful tail and then accidentally breaking it off (a few times) an enormous tangle in the string when I thought I was finished, my husband saying it wasn’t serious art but all that was the negatives that brought me to this humble piece that I had to make.

Happy Christmas and Best Wishes

It has been a fun year of WordPress.  Lots to read, interesting stories and as I am a visual person I love your pictures.  I love your art, your design, your buildings, your gardens, your pets, your ideas and your encouragement.  I have had lots of nice experiences and chats with you. Thankyou and have a lovely holiday break.

For all of you that are overseas I’d like you to know that Christmas day will be 35 degrees Celsius which is very hot.  There is a total fire ban in force which means some BBQ restrictions.  I think as it is my turn to do lunch this year it will be indoors with an air conditioner running.  I’ll post some pics post Christmas and I would love to see yours as well.

christmas card 2015

We promise we are all working hard towards our next exhibition at Cambridge Studio Gallery.

In between making sculpture, painting, drawing, cutting, assembling etc we must stop for coffee, do a little gardening and rest. We recently held our last meeting (food galore) in the gallery to discuss the final points.  It was mid winter bring your own everything.  One brought a big pot of hearty soup, crusty bread, rosemary chips (fries), dips, chocolate cake plus so much more.  Wine too.  IMAG1041[1] IMAG1081[1] IMAG1069[1] IMAG1071_-_Copy[1] IMAG1083[1] IMAG1080[1] IMAG0402_1[1]  The title of our up coming exhibition will be SEVEN.

Interpretation of the cultural symbol; Seven
The regularly exhibiting “Out of the Box” group have chosen to explore seven as a theme.  Culturally seven has been a significant symbol, with themes such as Seven deadly Sins, Seven Wonders of the world, Dance of the Seven veils, etc…

The diversity of the theme is reflected in the response by the individual artists to the group theme.  Subjects range from views of Melbourne, interiors of a gallery, seven colour spectrums as defined by Isaac Newton, seven sculptures from the imagination and even an artist has challenged herself to complete seven unfinished works…
